תת המשפחה דיון הינה חלק ממשפחת הציקדים הענפה.
דיון ספינולוסום בעל העלווה המרהיבה ירוקה-אפרפרה הינו צמח אציל מראה אך פחות מוכר בעולם הגינון. מקורו במקסיקו, ובגיל צעיר עלוותו פורצת רכה כמו משי,עולה כלופית ירוקה לבנה, מתחזקת והופכת לעלה פרוס וקשיח. לצמח דרושה תקופת הסתגלות להמשך התפתחות לאחר שתילה. אוהב השקיה ודישון קבועים, אז מראהו ירשים מהרבה זנים מקבילים, כמו גם גודלו, (בארץ מוצאו נראו מספר צמחים משמשים כחיפוי לתחנת הסעה, 16 מטרים אורך גזע מתפתל במספר שלוחות ומוטת עלים של למעלה משני מטרים יוצרת קונוס של 4 מטרים.).
בארץ יגיע הדיון ספינולוסום למיקסום יופיו בתנאי חצי צל, וצורך מקום מרווח להתפתחותו.
ייחוד הצמח בתוך משפחתו גם באה לידי ביטוי בקונוס הזרעים של הנקבה התלוי בצידי הצמח, דמוי פרי אנונה ענק ושעיר, אפור בצבעו.
Dion Spinulosum
The Dion is a member of the Cycad family. It displays high beauty in its marvelous gray-green leaves. However, this majestic plant is not well known in horticultural circles.
The Dion originates in Mexico and when young, its leaves are soft and velvet-like. It takes time to accommodate itself in the process of cultivation. As the plant slowly matures the leaves toughen. Provide it with regular watering and fertilizing. When you observe a grown plant, you will see the Dion surpasses most others with its splendor.
Will do best in a semi-shade and needs ample space to develop, taking into consideration that in cultivation it can grow to 6 meters. In nature it has been documented at 16 meters high and about 4 meters in width. The seed cone on the female plant hangs to the side like a huge anona fruit; gray in color.
